The Great British Swim

Posted by Nicole on 13th Mar 2020

Ross Edgley, a man of adventure and endurance. An extraordinary man from Grantham. On June 1st, 2018, Ross set out from Margate on the biggest adventure he has endured yet, a mission to be the first person to swim around the entirety of Great Britain. Did he do it? Yes, he successfully completed the swim after 157 days on November 4th, 2018.

After 1,780 miles, swimming 12 hours per day, stopping on a support boat to eat and sleep and not setting foot on land once throughout, Edgley was joined by 300 swimmers for the last mile in support of him victoriously reaching the end of his journey.

His longest single swim was 33.4km in 05:25, burned an estimated 505,219 calories and ate more than 500 bananas. Goals were met and world records were broken including, being the first person to swim the entire south coast in 30 days, completing the world’s longest staged sea swim in 157 days and swimming land’s end to John O’Groats in 62 days.

Not only was this a massive achievement for Ross doing something that he loves but he also came upon some hardships along the way. Ross bravely battled strong tides and currents in cold water, storms, jellyfish stings (including one’s tentacle getting stuck in his goggles) and swimming in late autumn. His efforts resulted in shoulder pain, wetsuit chafing and even his tongue partially disintegrating from saltwater exposure. If that isn’t dedication, I don’t know what is. The strong tides sometimes helped him swim at speeds of up to 8.7 knots. Edgley inspiringly said “your reason to continue needs to be stronger than your reason to stop”.

Throughout this journey, Ross tested Bremont’s Supermarine S2000 out by using it to help him comfortably complete his adventure. Ross says, “I am so incredibly proud to partner with Bremont as they embrace that exact same ethos of being ‘fearlessly progressive’ in their own field of watch manufacturing and horology as you can quite literally see the passion engrained into every timepiece.”

The S2000 is used extensively by professional divers and the military alike. It is the deepest diving watch within the collection and is made from a stainless-steel Bremont Trip-Tick case construction with a scratch resistant DLC treated case barrel. This watch is a Chronometer rated to ISO 3159 standard.
